Leadership This Week at Gracie Barra Centennial
This week at Gracie Barra Centennial, the focus is leadership.
Leadership is a word that gets used often, but its meaning is straightforward. It is not about being the most talented person in the room. It is not about being the loudest or drawing attention to yourself. Real leadership is about example. It is about how a person shows up, how they carry themselves, and how they respond when things are going well and when they are not.
At Gracie Barra Centennial, leadership begins with the small things. Showing up on time. Paying attention. Training hard. Staying respectful. Helping a teammate. Listening to instruction. Staying disciplined when tired. Staying humble when things are going well. Those things may seem small, but over time they shape character.
Leadership is also tied to growth. The goal is not to be better than someone else. The goal is to be better today than yesterday. That is how real progress is made. One good day at a time. One good decision at a time. One step forward at a time.
Some days that means improving technique. Some days it means having a better attitude. Some days it means pushing through something difficult instead of giving in. Either way, growth matters. When students understand that, jiu-jitsu becomes more than a class. It becomes part of building character.
That is one of the values that continues to shape the culture at Gracie Barra Centennial. The goal is to help students become confident, disciplined, and respectful people. It is to help them learn how to deal with adversity, stay steady under pressure, and lead at home, at school, at work, and in their communities. That kind of leadership is earned. It is built through daily effort.
As Week 14 continues, the curriculum supports that theme with techniques that require control, timing, balance, and discipline.
This Week’s Curriculum
Headlocks
This week, students will work on proper headlock control from standing and transitional positions. The focus will be on posture, balance, and safety while learning how to apply control correctly and avoid the mistakes that often lead to losing position.
Hip and Hand Throws
The takedown focus will be on hip and hand throws that rely on leverage, timing, and technique rather than strength. These techniques help students learn how to off-balance an opponent and create clean takedown opportunities while maintaining control.
Side Mount (Side Control)
On the ground, students will work on establishing and maintaining a strong side mount. The focus will be on pressure, positioning, and transitions that allow them to control their opponent, limit movement, and create opportunities to advance.
Leadership is not built in big speeches. It is built in daily habits. It is built by choosing to improve, choosing to stay disciplined, and choosing to help those around you. That is the message for this week: be better today than yesterday and keep moving forward.
