What is Courage?

Word of the Week: Courage

At Gracie Barra Centennial, we believe Jiu-Jitsu is about much more than learning techniques. It’s about developing the mindset and character that help our students grow both on and off the mats. This week, our focus is on one of the most important qualities a student can build, courage.

Courage means having the strength to face something difficult, even when you feel nervous or unsure.

Many people think courage means being fearless. In reality, courage is about taking action even when something feels uncomfortable.

On the Mats

Jiu-Jitsu gives students opportunities to practice every day.

You show courage to step onto the mat for the first time.

Be courageous by trying a technique that you’re still learning.

It takes courage to spar with a training partner who might be more experienced.

Every student has moments where training feels challenging. Maybe a technique isn’t clicking yet, a round feels tough, or confidence feels a little low that day.

Those moments are where it matters most.

When students continue to show up, try again, and push through those challenges, they build real confidence. Over time, that courage turns into resilience — the ability to stay calm, focused, and determined even in difficult situations.

Courage Builds Confidence

Confidence doesn’t come from things always being easy. It comes from facing challenges and realizing you can handle them.

Each time a student tries a new technique, competes in class, or pushes through a difficult round, they prove to themselves that they are capable of more than they thought.

That’s how courage turns into confidence.

Beyond Jiu-Jitsu

The lessons learned in training carry far beyond the academy.

Students who practice courage on the mats often find it easier to:

  • Speak up in school or at work
  • Face challenges without giving up
  • Try new things without fear of failure
  • Stand up for themselves and others

Jiu-Jitsu creates an environment where students can safely face challenges and grow stronger through them.

Building Leaders

At Gracie Barra Centennial, our goal is not only to build skilled martial artists, but also confident leaders.

Courage helps students take responsibility, face adversity, and support their teammates. It allows them to keep moving forward even when things feel difficult.

When students practice courage consistently, they begin to realize something powerful:

They are capable of far more than they once believed.

And that realization can change everything.

See you on the mats.
