Week 5

Published on

4 min read

At Gracie Barra Centennial, we know that strength isn’t just physical—it’s mental, emotional, and technical. In Jiu-Jitsu, strength means:
✅ Using technique over brute force
✅ Staying calm under pressure
✅ Committing to growth, even when it’s hard

This week, we’ll put our strength to the test by refining guard sweeps, sacrifice throws, and submission setups.

🔥 30-Minute Focus Sessions: Sacrifice throw setups & submissions from guard
🔥 Word of the Week: Strength – What it means in Jiu-Jitsu and beyond

🗣 Word of the Week: Strength

Strength in Jiu-Jitsu isn’t just about muscle—it’s about:
💪 Positional strength – Controlling an opponent with leverage, not force
🧠 Mental strength – Staying composed and disciplined in tough situations
❤️ Emotional strength – Overcoming setbacks and keeping a growth mindset

This week, let’s challenge ourselves to build true strength—on and off the mats!

Tiny Champions & Little Champions 1: Strength Through Movement

📍 Focus Areas: Self-defense, sweeps, and guard control

✅ Self-Defense: Distance management & clinch to back control
✅ Stand-Up Technique: One-hand shoulder throw
✅ Ground Technique: Sit-up sweep from guard
✅ Specific Training: Guard control & recovery

These movements teach kids how to use their opponent’s momentum, control space, and stay safe in any situation.

Little Champions 2: Advancing Guard Strength & Takedowns

📍 Focus Areas: Guard sweeps, submissions, and sacrifice throws

✅ Self-Defense: Headlock escape & roll reversal
✅ Stand-Up Technique: One-hand shoulder throw on the knees
✅ Ground Technique: Instructor’s choice of sweeps & submissions
✅ Specific Training: Guard control & breaking an opponent’s posture

By learning how to control and attack from the guard, kids build confidence in both offense and defense.

Adult Fundamentals (GB1): Guard Sweeps & Smart Submissions

📍 Focus Areas: Guard retention, sweeps, and basic submissions

✅ Self-Defense: Blocking punches & controlling from closed guard
✅ Sport Jiu-Jitsu: Pull feet sweep & waiter sweep
✅ GB1 Drills: Guard sweeps into mount & mount escapes
✅ GB1 Talking Point: “The GB Method” – Why structured training leads to success

These techniques teach new students how to sweep an opponent, gain control, and execute simple but effective submissions.

Adult All Levels (GB2): Sacrifice Throws & Advanced Guard Attacks

📍 Focus Areas: Sacrifice throws, guard attacks, and sweeps

✅ Stand-Up Technique: Sacrifice throw setups & counters
✅ Ground Technique: Guard submissions & sweeps
✅ Specific Training: Breaking an opponent’s base & setting up attacks

This training enhances positional awareness and submission setups, making students more efficient in both sport and self-defense scenarios.

🔥 Special Focus: Sacrifice Throws & Guard Submissions

This week’s 30-Minute Focus Sessions will help students:
✅ Execute sacrifice throws with proper timing & leverage
✅ Set up submissions directly from guard sweeps
✅ Develop fluid movement between offense & defense
