Week 5

Published on

4 min read

At Gracie Barra Centennial, Jiu-Jitsu is more than just a martial art—it’s a lifestyle built on discipline, growth, and purpose. In Week 5, we dive deep into bottom guard, sweeps, and sacrifice throws, helping our students develop the confidence and control needed from challenging positions.

🗣 Word of the Week: RESPONSIBILITIES

In Jiu-Jitsu, responsibility starts with how we show up: ready to train, eager to learn, and respectful of our partners. We are responsible for:
✅ Keeping ourselves and our teammates safe
✅ Honoring the art with effort and focus
✅ Helping create a positive learning environment

Just like in life, what we put into training directly affects what we get out of it.

🥋 Tiny Champions & Little Champions 1

📍 Focus: Bottom Guard Awareness

  • Self-Defense: Body lock > Clinch to the back

  • Ground Technique: Sit-up sweep from guard

  • Specific Training: Guard control and balance

These young students work on creating strong habits from the bottom, learning to recover, sweep, and maintain composure under pressure.

🥋 Little Champions 2

📍 Focus: Guard recovery and transition

  • Self-Defense: Headlock escape (roll reversal)

  • Stand-Up: One-hand shoulder throw from knees

  • Ground Technique: Instructor’s choice of sweep/submission

  • Specific Training: Guard bottom

This week challenges LC2 students to develop creativity and timing when working from the bottom.

🥋 Adults Fundamentals (GB1)

📍 Focus: Guard retention and attacking from bottom

  • Self-Defense: Blocking punches from closed guard → arm control → armbar

  • Sport Jiu-Jitsu:

    • Pull feet sweep

    • Waiter sweep

  • GB1 Drill: Pull feet sweep → mount → bridge escape (sequential)

  • Talking Point: Jiu-Jitsu for Everyone

This class helps newer students gain confidence in using guard as both a defensive and offensive position.

🥋 Adults All Levels (GB2)

📍 Focus: Advanced bottom guard techniques

  • Self-Defense: Blocking punches + triangle setup

  • Sport Jiu-Jitsu:

    • Tripod sweep

    • Outside hook sweep when tripod is defended

  • GB1 Drill: Tripod sweep → half tech lift → closed guard

  • Talking Point: The GB Method

GB2 students refine their sweeps, transitioning smoothly from defense to attack.

🎯 BJJ Focus Sessions (30 mins)

This week’s focus:
✔️ Sacrifice throws
✔️ Sweeps from guard bottom

These quick sessions are perfect for refining specific techniques in a focused environment.

💪 Women’s Self-Defense – Tuesday @ 6 PM

This week we’re training:
✨ Punch block from closed guard
✨ Triangle choke finish
✨ Sweep transitions from bottom guard

Supportive, empowering, and beginner-friendly!

Train with focus. Show up with responsibility. Grow every week.
👊 Let’s get to work, team!
