Week 2

Published on

4 min read

At Gracie Barra Centennial, we follow a structured training program that helps students of all levels build confidence, develop technical skills, and grow as martial artists. Week 2 focuses on side mount escapes, stand-up takedowns, and self-defense strategies that are essential for improving both offensive and defensive techniques.

This week, our 30-minute BJJ Focus Sessions will emphasize the O goshi (hip throw) takedown and a side mount submission sequence, providing students with valuable skills to enhance their overall control and effectiveness.

🗣 Word of the Week: Brotherhood

Jiu-Jitsu is more than just individual skill—it’s about the bond between training partners. Brotherhood in Jiu-Jitsu means:
➡️ Trusting your teammates to train safely and push you to improve
➡️ Supporting and encouraging each other in every class
➡️ Learning together, because progress comes from working as a team

This week, let’s focus on helping our partners grow and building a strong community on and off the mats.

Tiny Champions & Little Champions 1: Building Strong Foundations

📍 Focus Areas: Self-defense, takedowns, and guard control

Young students begin their journey by learning the importance of balance, movement, and defense:
✅ Self-Defense: Push defense and maintaining a strong base
✅ Stand-Up Technique: Outside hook takedown
✅ Ground Technique: Side control escape to recover guard
✅ Specific Training: Side mount transitions

These techniques help kids develop coordination and confidence, while reinforcing fun and safe training habits.

Little Champions 2: Advancing Stand-Up & Ground Control

📍 Focus Areas: Side mount escapes, break falls, and technical lifts

Students at this level build on their foundational skills with more advanced escapes and movement drills:
✅ Self-Defense: Push defense, break falls, and technical lifts
✅ Stand-Up Technique: Outside hook takedown
✅ Ground Technique: Instructor’s choice of escapes from side mount
✅ Specific Training: Refining control and movement

These lessons ensure that students can stay safe, recover position, and control their opponent effectively.

Adult Fundamentals (GB1): A Strong Foundation for Beginners

📍 Focus Areas: Headlock escapes, side control recovery, and sport Jiu-Jitsu fundamentals

New students focus on key movements that help them stay safe and control their opponent:
✅ Self-Defense: Escaping from standing headlocks
✅ Sport Jiu-Jitsu: Recovering from side mount
✅ GB1 Drill: Establishing strong side mount control
✅ GB1 Talking Point: The Red Shield—embracing Gracie Barra values

By drilling these techniques, students gain confidence in real-life situations and on the mats.

Adult All Levels (GB2): Sharpening High-Level Techniques

📍 Focus Areas: Hip throws, hand throws, and advanced side mount escapes

Advanced students refine their techniques with a focus on effective transitions and positional dominance:
✅ Stand-Up Technique: Hip throws and hand throws
✅ Ground Technique: Side mount escapes and submissions
✅ Specific Training: Pressure control and maintaining dominant positions

These drills help students enhance their ability to control and finish an opponent, improving both competition and self-defense skills.
