Week 2: Mastering Outside Hook Takedowns and Side Control Escapes

Published on

4 min read

Welcome to Week 2 of the Gracie Barra Curriculum! We have an exciting and action-packed week planned for all our students. Here’s a look at what’s in store for each class.

Tiny Champions (3-4 years old) and Little Champions 1

Our youngest students will be focusing on building a solid foundation in self-defense. In Class A, they’ll learn how to maintain a good base and defend themselves if someone tries to push them. Class B will introduce the outside hook takedown, a fundamental skill for their development. For ground techniques, we’ll work on side control escapes and recovering the guard, providing a well-rounded start to their Jiu-Jitsu journey.

Little Champions 2 and Juniors

For our Little Champions 2 and Juniors, Class A will cover essential self-defense techniques. They will practice defending against a push while keeping a strong base, break fall, pedal kicks, technical lift, and safe stance. In Class B, students will also focus on the outside hook takedown. On the ground, they’ll learn how to escape side control, an important skill for maintaining control in a match.

Fundamentals Class A (Adults)

In our Fundamentals Class A for adults, we have a comprehensive self-defense curriculum lined up. Students will learn to escape from a side standing headlock, perform a rear takedown, transition to a technical mount, and finish with an armbar. Ground techniques will include escapes from side control and recovering the guard. Class B will dive into escaping from a rear headlock with both forward and outside hook takedowns, and further ground work will focus on transitioning to the turtle position.

All Levels Class and Advanced

For our All Levels Class and Advanced students, the week will feature hip/hand throws and a ground technique selected by the professor. Each class will conclude with specific training and drills to ensure everyone gets the most out of their practice.

🗣️Word of the Week: Brotherhood

This week’s word is “brotherhood,” a concept deeply ingrained in the Jiu-Jitsu community. Brotherhood signifies the strong sense of camaraderie and mutual support among practitioners. Just like siblings, we support and encourage each other both on and off the mats. This bond creates a positive learning environment where everyone can grow and improve together. In Jiu-Jitsu, brotherhood means looking out for one another, sharing knowledge, and pushing each other to achieve our best.

Stay dedicated, and let’s have an amazing week of training!
