Week 11 at Gracie Barra Centennial: Honing Skills and Embracing Respect on the Mats

4 min read

Welcome to Week 11 of the Gracie Barra Curriculum! This week, we’re diving into new techniques, with a focus on improving self-defense, takedowns, and ground control. Let’s see what’s in store for each class as we continue to sharpen our Jiu-Jitsu skills.

Tiny Champions (3-4 years old) & Little Champions 1

For our Tiny Champions and Little Champions 1, this week’s training will introduce them to some exciting new moves. In Class A, they will learn how to throw a proper jab and a straight punch—both essential techniques for self-defense that also help develop hand-eye coordination. In Class B, they’ll be practicing the foot sweep takedown, a classic Jiu-Jitsu move that teaches balance and timing.

On the ground, they’ll be working on the bullfighter guard pass. This pass involves moving around an opponent’s legs to gain a superior position—a great way for them to start learning how to maneuver effectively during ground exchanges.

Little Champions 2 & Juniors

In Class A, our Little Champions 2 and Juniors will focus on self-defense techniques that deal with common real-world situations. They’ll learn how to escape hair pulling and back pack pulling—important skills that teach students how to stay calm and protect themselves. In Class B, they’ll refine their takedown skills by working on a body lock to inside hook takedown, a versatile and powerful technique that emphasizes control.

On the ground, the focus will be on passing the guard. Guard passing is a key aspect of Jiu-Jitsu, allowing students to transition from defense to offense and take control of the match.

Fundamentals Class (Adults)

For our adults in the Fundamentals class, this week’s self-defense focus is on blocking a hook punch and transitioning into a hip throw, finishing with a straight armbar and knee on belly. This sequence is effective for turning a defensive situation into an offensive one, all while maintaining control.

On the ground, students will work on opening the guard and passing it using the knee slide. This is a fundamental guard pass that requires balance and technique, and it’s a crucial part of developing a strong ground game.

In Class B, the self-defense technique will focus on slipping a hook punch, moving into a body lock takedown, and transitioning smoothly to mount. For the ground technique, students will focus on standing guard passes, which are vital for breaking through an opponent’s defenses and gaining a dominant position.

All Levels & Advanced Classes

For the All Levels and Advanced classes, students will work on leg grabs—a powerful tool for takedowns. The ground techniques will be selected by the professor to tailor each session to the needs of the class. Each class will finish with specific training and drills to reinforce the day’s lessons, ensuring that students leave with sharper skills and greater confidence.

🗣️Word of the Week: Respect

This week’s word is respect—a cornerstone of Jiu-Jitsu and martial arts as a whole. In Jiu-Jitsu, respect is more than just a rule of etiquette; it’s a principle that guides our interactions on and off the mats. Whether it’s respecting your partner during sparring, appreciating the effort of your classmates, or recognizing the lineage of Jiu-Jitsu techniques passed down through generations, respect is a crucial part of our practice. As we train this week, let’s remember that respect creates a positive learning environment and helps us grow not only as martial artists but as individuals.

We’re excited to see all of our students bring their energy, focus, and respect to the mats this week. Let’s work hard and continue to elevate our Jiu-Jitsu game together!
