Week 10: Gratitude on the Mats

Published on

4 min read

Walk into Gracie Barra Centennial on any given night and you’ll notice something before you notice any technique. Students thank their training partners after every round. Beginners thank the higher belts who just spent five minutes helping them understand a detail. Parents thank coaches they’ve never formally met. It’s not scripted. It’s just what happens when a room full of people understands they’re better because of each other.

That’s this week’s Word of the Week, and it’s not an accident that it lines up with what’s actually happening on our mats.

Word of the Week: Gratitude

Definition: Gratitude means recognizing and appreciating what someone has given you — their time, their patience, their effort — and letting them know it mattered.

Jiu-Jitsu has a strange way of teaching gratitude that most sports don’t. Your training partner doesn’t have to let you practice an armbar on them. Your coach doesn’t have to slow down and explain the same detail for the fifth time. Every stripe you earn has someone else’s fingerprints on it — a partner who tapped so you could learn the finish, a coach who corrected your hip angle until it clicked.

Gratitude in Jiu-Jitsu isn’t a nice sentiment. It’s the reason the training even works.

This Week’s Curriculum

Every program at Gracie Barra Centennial is training around the same center of gravity this week: top control from Mount or Knee on Belly. Different ages, different techniques, same lesson in trusting a training partner enough to work these positions safely together.

Tiny Champions are building the foundational movement patterns behind top control through

the Superman drill, paired with open motor skill development.

Little Champions 1 are learning the transition from Mount to Technical Mount, into Seat Belt control and taking the back, along with strike

defense using the Hip Throw and Knee on Belly.

Little Champions 2 are working Mount control adjustments and the bridge-escape-to-guard pass rotation, with the Keylock from Mount and a Front Bear Hug Escape rounding out the self-defense side.

Juniors & Teens are combining Knee on Belly with the Collar Choke in one class and the Spinning Armbar in the other, off an Outside Hook Takedown entry.

GB1 (Adult Fundamentals) are deep in Mount and Knee on Belly this week: the X-Choke from Mount, Technical Mount into a two-collar choke, the Straight Armbar from Mount, and the Keylock from Mount — alongside self defense against standing headlocks and the

Standing Guillotine escape. This week’s GB1 Talking Point is The GB Belt System.

GB2 (All Levels) are pairing a stand-up throw with the same ground theme: Tai Otoshi off the feet, into an Armbar from Mount on the ground — a body drop that blends naturally with a defensive Jiu-Jitsu posture, followed by the second submission in this position’s arc.

Why Gratitude and Mount Control Belong in the Same Week

Mount and Knee on Belly are dominant positions. That’s precisely why they demand the most gratitude, not the least. The person underneath you is trusting you to control them

without hurting them. The person on top is trusting their partner to give honest resistance instead of just lying still. Neither works without both people showing up for each other.

That’s the whole philosophy of Gracie Barra Centennial in one week’s curriculum. You don’t get good at Jiu-Jitsu by yourself, and you don’t get to keep training it without saying thank you to the people who make it possible — your coaches, your teammates, and the training partner who taps out so you can learn.

We’ll see everyone on the mats this week. Say thank you to somebody who’s earned it.
