Week 10 at Gracie Barra Centennial: Building Skills and Courage on the Mats

Published on

4 min read

As we roll into Week 10 of the Gracie Barra Curriculum, students at every level will have the opportunity to fine-tune their Jiu-Jitsu techniques and push themselves physically and mentally. Here’s what each class can look forward to this week:

Tiny Champions (3-4 years old) & Little Champions 1

This week’s focus for our Tiny Champions and Little Champions 1 is all about foundational self-defense and escapes. In Class A, they’ll learn how to escape a back bear hug—an important skill for handling real-life situations where an opponent grabs from behind. In Class B, they’ll work on the outside hook takedown, which will teach them the coordination and balance required to take control of a standing opponent.

For their ground training, the focus will be on escaping from the bottom mount. This essential skill teaches young students how to regain control when an opponent has the upper hand and prepares them for future transitions and escapes.

Little Champions 2 & Juniors

In our Little Champions 2 and Juniors classes, students will be learning a more advanced version of the back bear hug escape—this time focusing on escaping when their arms are trapped. In Class B, they’ll continue developing their takedown skills with the outside hook takedown, a versatile technique that builds both strength and agility.

On the ground, the professor will introduce submissions from the top mount. Mastering submissions from this dominant position allows students to finish a match decisively, and learning these techniques will build confidence in their ability to control an opponent.

Fundamentals Class (Adults)

In the Fundamentals class, adults will cover self-defense techniques that could prove essential in real-world encounters. In Class A, they’ll learn how to escape a standing guillotine choke, a common and dangerous submission that requires quick thinking and precise technique. On the ground, the X-choke from mount and the technical mount with a two-collar choke will be the main focus, allowing students to develop strong submission attacks from a superior position.

In Class B, the self-defense focus shifts to escaping a standing side headlock with punches—another practical skill that is crucial for self-defense. On the ground, students will work on a straight armbar and a key lock from mount, two effective submission techniques that highlight control and leverage.

All Levels & Advanced Classes

Students in the All Levels and Advanced classes will concentrate on hip throws, a powerful technique for unbalancing and controlling opponents during takedowns. The ground technique will be chosen by the professor, ensuring that each session is tailored to challenge the students and elevate their game. Classes will wrap up with specific training and drills to reinforce the techniques learned throughout the week.

🗣️Word of the Week: Courage

This week’s word is courage—a vital concept in both life and Jiu-Jitsu. Courage is what allows us to face challenges, whether it’s stepping onto the mats for the first time, attempting a difficult technique, or pushing through moments of exhaustion and frustration. In Jiu-Jitsu, courage isn’t just about physical bravery; it’s about the mental strength to keep going, even when things get tough. As we practice this week, let’s embrace the courage to improve, to fail, and to keep coming back, stronger than before.

Week 10 promises to be filled with learning opportunities and growth for everyone on the mats. Remember to bring your best effort and plenty of courage as we work through these essential techniques together!
