The Power of the Word of the Week: How We Build Strong Kids & Confident Adults

Perseverance

At Gracie Barra Centennial, our training goes far beyond techniques, takedowns, and submissions. Every week, we highlight a powerful character value that helps our students grow on and off the mats. This week’s Word of the Week is Perseverance — the ability to keep moving forward, even when things get challenging.

Our values-based curriculum is designed to strengthen character, build confidence, and teach students of all ages the mindset that leads to success in Jiu-Jitsu and in life.

What Perseverance Means at Gracie Barra Centennial

Perseverance is one of the most important values in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. It’s the mindset that turns hesitation into confidence, obstacles into progress, and frustration into breakthrough moments. On the mats, perseverance looks like trying that sweep again, adjusting your grips, staying calm in a difficult position, and not giving up when techniques take time to master.

For kids, perseverance builds resilience — the ability to stay patient, stay focused, and push through challenges at school, at home, and in sports.
For adults, it strengthens mental toughness, consistency, and the commitment to personal growth.

No matter your age, perseverance teaches you to trust the process and believe in your ability to improve one class at a time.

How Our Values-Based Curriculum Builds Character

Every class at GBC is intentionally structured to support both technical development and character development. Here’s how perseverance is woven into our daily training:

1. Technical Challenges That Build Confidence

Students face age-appropriate challenges in every class — from learning wrist grab escapes in Tiny Champs to mastering body lock takedowns in GB1. These challenges teach students to lean into hard work instead of avoiding it.

2. Consistency in Training

Perseverance is reinforced through repetition, drilling, and staying committed even when motivation dips. Students learn that progress comes through showing up.

3. Positive Coaching and Encouragement

Our instructors teach students to reshape their self-talk:
“Try again,” “Breathe,” “Let’s adjust your technique,” “You’re improving,”
— all reinforcing that effort is what drives success.

4. Real-World Application

We help students connect the dots: the same perseverance used to escape a tough position can help them handle a difficult school assignment, a challenge at work, or a stressful day.

Building Strong Kids

Children thrive when they learn that success isn’t instant — it comes from effort and patience. Jiu-Jitsu gives them the perfect environment to learn:

  • How to handle frustration

  • How to stay calm under pressure

  • How to take corrections without giving up

  • How to celebrate progress

  • How to stay committed even when something feels tough

These skills build confidence, responsibility, and emotional resilience that stay with them for life.

Building Confident Adults

Adults often face different challenges: stress, self-doubt, busy schedules, and the pressure of balancing work and family. Perseverance in training teaches:

  • The discipline to show up consistently

  • The ability to focus under pressure

  • The confidence to keep improving

  • The mindset to push past physical and mental barriers

This makes Jiu-Jitsu not just a workout — but a path to personal growth and long-term wellness.

Perseverance in Action: This Week’s Curriculum

Here’s how perseverance shows up in each program this week:

  • GB1: Distance management, body lock takedown, open guard, over-leg guard pass

  • GB2: Leg grabs + guard top

  • Tiny Champs / Little Champs 1: Wrist grab escapes + opening the guard

  • Little Champs 2: Wrist grab escapes + instructor’s choice guard passing

Every technique challenges students to try, refine, and repeat — the heart of perseverance.
