Week 11 at Gracie Barra Centennial: Self-Control in Action
At Gracie Barra Centennial, we believe Jiu-Jitsu is more than just self-defense—it’s a lifestyle that builds discipline, focus, and respect. This week, our Word of the Week is Self-Control, and our classes are centered on learning how to stay calm, focused, and intentional both on and off the mats.
Word of the Week: Self-Control
Self-control is the ability to manage our actions, thoughts, and emotions even when things get tough. In Jiu-Jitsu, this might mean staying calm under pressure, resisting the urge to give up, or focusing on technique instead of frustration. Off the mats, self-control helps us in school, at work, and in our relationships by teaching us to pause, think, and make better decisions.
When we practice self-control, we’re not just learning how to win—we’re learning how to lead ourselves with discipline and purpose.
Program Highlights
Tiny Champions & Little Champions 1
Our youngest champions will practice drills that emphasize patience and awareness. We’ll show them how to wait for the right moment to move and how listening carefully to instructions is part of using self-control.
Little Champions 2 & Juniors
This age group will explore the importance of controlled movements in sparring. Students will learn that slowing down and focusing on the details can make them sharper, safer, and more successful on the mats.
Adults GB1 (Fundamentals)
Adult beginners will dive into how self-control helps avoid mistakes in basic techniques. Controlling posture, breathing, and pacing ensures stronger defense and smoother transitions during training.
Adults GB2 (Advanced)
Our advanced students will work on maintaining composure in high-pressure situations. Whether defending a tough position or executing complex attacks, self-control becomes the key to consistency and mastery.
Self-Defense & Sport Jiu-Jitsu Focus
-
Self-Defense: Using calm, controlled responses to handle headlocks and standing attacks.
-
Sport Jiu-Jitsu: Sharpening techniques by focusing on precision over speed.
By applying self-control, students can handle challenges more effectively—whether it’s a sparring round, a tournament match, or a real-life situation.
Women’s Class & Focus Sessions
In our Women’s Classes and Focus Sessions this week, we’ll highlight how self-control helps build confidence and resilience. From managing energy during drills to setting boundaries in everyday life, these sessions will empower students to find strength in composure.
Closing Motivation
Self-control is the foundation of growth in Jiu-Jitsu and in life. When we master our reactions, we unlock the ability to think clearly, train smarter, and lead by example. Champions are not defined by power alone—but by the discipline to use it wisely.
