The Gracie Barra kids jiu-jitsu program just got rebuilt from the ground up. GBK 6.0 launches Monday across every kids class at Gracie Barra Centennial — Tiny Champions, Little Champions 1, Little Champions 2, and Juniors & Teens.
This isn’t a tweak. It’s a full curriculum refresh — built on years of feedback from Gracie Barra schools worldwide about what actually moves kids forward: faster progression, deeper retention, and more reps where reps matter most.
If you’ve been with us through 5.0, you already know how strong that program was. 6.0 takes the same world-class foundation and sharpens it.
Why GBK 6.0?
There’s a principle we say to every student, every week: better than yesterday. It applies to the students. It applies to the coaches. And it applies to the curriculum itself.
Gracie Barra didn’t roll out 6.0 because 5.0 was broken. They rolled it out because the standard kept rising. More mat time. Better progression. Cleaner age-appropriate complexity at each level. The new program reflects what’s actually been working in the best Gracie Barra kids programs across the world — and now it’s the standard everywhere, including Centennial.
That’s the lineage we’re part of: 100+ years of refinement. Every generation of instructors taking what they were given and giving back something a little sharper. 6.0 is that, on paper.
What’s Actually Changing
More drilling. Less talking.
The single biggest shift: Juniors & Teens now spend 20 minutes per class on dedicated training drills — up from 10 in the previous program. That’s nearly half the mat time spent moving, repeating, building muscle memory. Kids don’t get good at jiu-jitsu by watching technique. They get good by doing it. 6.0 puts more reps in their bodies.
Cleaner progression.
The 16-week cycle now follows how kids actually learn — position by position, with deliberate building blocks. Week 1 starts with guard. Week 2 introduces side mount. Week 3 moves to guard top. Each week adds a layer. By Week 16, students have cycled through every major position with both self-defense and sport applications.
Restructured Little Champions format.
Little Champions 1 and Little Champions 2 classes now run with two dedicated training drill blocks instead of one. More reps, better retention, stronger fundamentals — without losing the games and play that make our youngest kids fall in love with the sport in the first place.
New warm-ups.
You’ll notice your kid coming home talking about new movements. The 6.0 warm-ups are designed to actually prepare the body for what’s coming in class — bridges, hip escapes, break falls, and age-appropriate calisthenics calibrated to each program. Less generic, more specific.
Week 1 Preview
Here’s what your child will see on the mats this week:
Tiny Champions
- Class A: Locomotion drill — Ice Cream Race (moving in a supine position), Kitten Guard technique from guard bottom
- Class B: Locomotion drill — Ice Cream Race With Red Light, Kitten Guard technique
- Game: Bulldog
Note for Tiny Champions parents: The 6.0 program for our youngest students is built differently than the older age groups. Each week trains a specific developmental movement skill — locomotion, stabilization, manipulation — wrapped inside fun jiu-jitsu themes like “Kitten Guard” and “Alligator’s Mouth.” This is purpose-built early-childhood movement education with jiu-jitsu woven through it, not a watered-down adult curriculum. Your 4–6 year old will be building motor skills that pay off for the rest of their athletic life.
Little Champions 1
- Class A: Guard tag drills, scissor sweep from guard bottom
- Class B: Double leg takedown, double leg defense response with guard recovery + scissor sweep
- Game: Bulldog
Little Champions 2
- Class A: Spider guard control drills, spider guard sweep
- Class B: Guard retention drills, triangle from spider guard
- Game: Bulldog
Juniors & Teens
- Class A: Guard pull takedown drills, scissor sweep from guard bottom
- Class B: Wrist grab escape, triangle from guard
- Game: Never Two
What Parents Need to Know
- No schedule changes. Class times stay the same.
- Same coaches. Same belt path. Same uniforms.
- What’s different is what happens between when they bow in and when they bow out. More drilling, sharper progression, better warm-ups.
- No action needed on your part. Just bring them to class.
Two Important Dates
📅 Belt Ceremony — Saturday, June 6 (this one matters more than usual)
- Kids: 9:00 AM
- Adults: 10:00 AM
This isn’t a routine ceremony. June 6 is also the first promotion under the new GBK belt system — IBJJF updated the youth belt structure, Gracie Barra is rolling it out worldwide, and our June 6 ceremony is where it goes live for every kid at Centennial. The grey and white belt minimum drops from 1 year to 6 months, and the last three stripes on every belt now display in the color of the next belt — so a grey belt’s final stripes are yellow, yellow’s final stripes are orange, and so on. Kids will literally see what’s next on their own belt.
What this means for your kid on June 6: Most kids keep their current belt. The one exception — kids who currently have more than 6 stripes on the grey-and-white belt will be promoted to grey. Everyone else stays exactly where they are; the new system applies to the next promotion your kid earns. Adult belts are unchanged. (Full deep-dive coming in a separate post.)

We’re proud of what 5.0 built. We’re more excited about what 6.0 is going to build.
Better than yesterday. Always.
