Tying Your Belt & White Belt Must-Knows

Starting Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at Gracie Barra Centennial? Whether you’re brand new or just received your Gi, this guide covers everything white belts need to know—from tying your belt correctly to mat etiquette and beginner tips that will set you up for success.

Why Learning to Tie Your Jiu-Jitsu Belt Matters

Knowing how to tie your BJJ belt properly isn’t just about looking good—it’s about respect, discipline, and showing you’re ready to learn. A clean knot shows that you care about your training and the traditions of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Step-by-Step: How to Tie a Jiu-Jitsu Belt (The Gracie Barra Way)

Follow these simple instructions to tie your BJJ belt with a clean, secure knot:

  1. Find the center of your belt and place it just below your belly button.

  2. Wrap both ends around your waist, crossing behind your back and bringing them to the front.

  3. Tuck the top end underneath both layers at your waist and pull it out.

  4. Tie a square knot by crossing the top end over the bottom and pulling it through.

  5. Adjust for even ends.

Jiu-Jitsu Hygiene Rules for White Belts

At Gracie Barra Centennial, cleanliness is essential. Here’s how to stay clean and respectful:

  • Always wear a clean Gi to class.

  • Trim your fingernails and toenails.

  • Wear sandals off the mat—never go barefoot in the bathroom.

  • Wear a rash guard or fitted shirt under your Gi.

Mat Etiquette for Beginners

White belts, here’s what you need to know:

  • Bow before stepping on the mat.

  • Line up by rank at the beginning and end of class.

  • Ask questions respectfully.

  • Tap early, tap often—it’s how you learn and stay safe.

  • Leave ego at the door—everyone is here to grow.

What to Expect as a New White Belt

It’s normal to feel overwhelmed. Focus on:

  • Consistency over perfection—just keep showing up.

  • Surviving sparring—not winning.

  • Learning one technique at a time.

  • Building confidence, discipline, and friendships.

A Message to Higher Belts

Every black belt was once a white belt.
Please remember to be encouraging, supportive, and patient.
