If there’s one lesson we learn every day on the mats, it’s this: The Growth Mindset works.
Growth requires struggle.
Kids who avoid discomfort fall behind the moment life gets hard.
Kids who push through discomfort become leaders.
That’s exactly what we dig into on Episode #3 of the Aware. Prepared. Willing. Podcast:
“Do Your Kids Have a Fixed or Growth Mindset?”
Fixed vs. Growth: Why It Matters
A fixed mindset tells a kid:
“If I’m not good at something right away, I never will be.”
“Mistakes mean I’m not smart.”
“I should only do things I know I’ll win.”
So they quit. They hide. They blame the world.
A growth mindset says:
“I can get better if I work.”
“Difficulty is a challenge — not a threat.”
“My effort determines my future.”
Those kids don’t fear failure — they expect it and keep going.
How Parents Accidentally Build a Fixed Mindset
Most fixed mindsets don’t start on the mat or in the classroom — they start at home with one simple trap:
Praising talent instead of effort.
“You’re so smart.”
“You’re such a natural.”
“You’re the best out there.”
That feels good in the moment, but it teaches:
If I fail, I’m not who they think I am.
Growth mindset parenting sounds different:
“I’m proud of how hard you worked today.”
“You kept trying even when it was frustrating.”
“That improvement shows your dedication.”
The focus shifts to choices — not gifts.
The Hard Truth: Struggle Builds Strength
A study in 2019 found that 69% of kids quit sports by age 13 — and the top reason wasn’t pressure…
It was lack of growth.
Kids say “fun” = improving, being challenged, and earning success.
Trophies for showing up? That’s not progress.
That’s a shortcut — and kids know it.
We teach students that progress is earned.
Sweat matters.
Consistency matters.
Character matters.
The Mat as the Perfect Classroom
On the mats, every student faces the same moments:
• They get taken down
• They get stuck
• They get frustrated
• They want to quit
And then — they come back.
Jiu-Jitsu forces a choice:
Be afraid of challenge… or learn to overcome it.
We know which path leads to a strong future.
How You Can Build a Growth Mindset at Home
Here are three habits that make a real difference:
1️⃣ Praise the process
Not the scoreboard. Not the outcome.
“What did you learn today that was hard?”
2️⃣ Normalize failure
Show them your own mistakes — and your response to them.
No perfection stories. No shame.
3️⃣ Model perseverance
Kids copy what they see.
If you quit when it gets hard, they will, too.
