Week 16 at Gracie Barra Centennial: Growth on and off the Mats

At Gracie Barra Centennial, every week brings a new focus that challenges us to sharpen both our Jiu-Jitsu skills and our mindset. For Week 16, our Word of the Week is Growth. Growth is about moving beyond our comfort zones, learning from challenges, and embracing the process of becoming better each day. On the mats, it means pushing through resistance and developing new techniques. Off the mats, it’s about building discipline, confidence, and perseverance.

Key Value: Growth

Growth doesn’t happen overnight. It’s built from consistent effort, patience, and a willingness to learn. In Jiu-Jitsu, every mistake is an opportunity to adjust, and every roll is a chance to improve. We encourage students this week to ask themselves: Where have I grown since I started training? Where can I keep growing?

Tiny Champions & Little Champions

Our youngest students will focus on fundamental movements and building confidence:

  • Self-Defense: Front break fall, rocking chair, and technical lift.

  • Sport Jiu-Jitsu: Knee on belly from mount.

  • Character Lesson: Growth means trying your best—even if a skill feels tricky at first.

GBK (Teens & Juniors)

The youth programs will challenge students to refine their basics while adding more advanced movement:

  • Self-Defense: Foot throws (instructor’s choice).

  • Sport Jiu-Jitsu: Knee on belly variations.
These lessons help students expand their skill sets while learning to trust the process of trial and error.

GB1 (Adults Fundamentals)

Adult beginners will develop core self-defense and sport concepts:

  • Self-Defense: Escape from a front bear hug under the arms, breaking grips, and outside hook takedown.

  • Sport Jiu-Jitsu: Straight arm bar from mount and knee on belly transition.
For new students, growth is about consistency—each class builds your foundation.

GB2 (Adults Advanced)

Advanced students will focus on adding layers of complexity:

  • Self-Defense & Throws: Foot throws.

  • Sport Jiu-Jitsu: Knee on belly transitions and attacks.
Here, growth comes from refining details and applying techniques under higher pressure.

Women’s Class

Our women’s program continues to build strength, confidence, and connection. This week’s theme of growth is a reminder to support each other and celebrate progress. Tuesday at 6:00pm is the perfect time to join us for an empowering session.

BJJ Focus Sessions

Students seeking extra mat time can attend BJJ Focus Sessions to sharpen the week’s techniques and roll with intention. These classes are a powerful way to accelerate growth in your game.

Closing Thought

Growth is never about perfection—it’s about consistent steps forward. Whether it’s hitting a sweep you’ve been practicing, showing up to class after a long day, or encouraging your training partner, every effort matters. Let’s commit to growth this week, together.
