Focus Through Jiu-Jitsu: Building Better Habits On and Off the Mats

Focus at Gracie Barra

At Gracie Barra Centennial, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is about much more than learning techniques. Every class provides an opportunity for students to develop valuable life skills that help them succeed both on and off the mats. This week’s Word of the Week is Focus.

Word of the Week: Focus

Focus means giving your full attention and effort to the task in front of you.

In Jiu-Jitsu, focus allows students to learn techniques more effectively, stay aware during training, and continue improving over time. Whether it’s listening carefully during instruction, practicing a new movement, or staying calm during live training, focus is a skill that helps students get the most out of every class.

Learning to focus on the mats also helps students build positive habits in school, at home, and in everyday life. When students learn how to concentrate on a task and give their best effort, they develop confidence and discipline that carry over into all areas of life.

At Gracie Barra Centennial, we encourage our students to stay present, work hard, and focus on continuous improvement.

Memorial Day Schedule Reminder

Gracie Barra Centennial will be closed on Monday, May 25th, in observance of Memorial Day.

We hope everyone enjoys a safe and meaningful holiday with family and friends as we take time to honor those who have served our country.

Week 3 Curriculum

This week students will continue building their Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu skills through the Week 3 curriculum.

Ground Strikes

Students will learn how to understand and manage situations involving strikes while developing awareness, positioning, and control.

Leg Grabs

Leg grab techniques help students develop takedown skills, balance, and timing while reinforcing proper body positioning.

Passing Guard

Passing guard is one of the most important skills in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Students will work on improving pressure, movement, and control while advancing to dominant positions.

These techniques help students build a strong foundation while developing problem-solving skills and confidence under pressure.

Roll With The Doc: Injury Prevention and Recovery

We are excited to host a special event in partnership with Ascension Physical Therapy.

Tuesday, May 26, 2026

6:30 PM – 8:30 PM

This event is specifically designed for Jiu-Jitsu athletes and provides an opportunity to learn more about injury prevention, recovery, mobility, and performance.

Participants will have the opportunity to:

  • Discover movement limitations that may affect training
  • Roll and interact with a physical therapist who actively trains Jiu-Jitsu
  • Discuss pain, mobility, recovery, and injury prevention strategies
  • Receive personalized insight into improving movement and performance

Whether you’re dealing with a current injury or simply want to move and feel better on the mats, this event is a valuable opportunity for our students.

Upcoming Competition Opportunities
