There are two kinds of people who read a post like this.
The first has never stepped on a mat. You’ve thought about it for months, maybe years. You’ve watched the videos. You’ve wondered if you’re too old, too out of shape, or too far behind to begin.
The second has stepped on a mat and stepped off. Maybe you got hurt. Maybe the room felt more like a fight than a class. Maybe life got busy and you never found your way back.
You’re both standing in the same place: at the start. That’s exactly where we want you.
Size is real. Leverage is the answer.
Jiu-jitsu doesn’t make anyone stronger than they are. It makes size matter less. A smaller person who understands position, timing, and leverage can control a bigger one. That isn’t a trick. It’s physics, learned one position at a time.
But leverage only works when you understand it, and you don’t learn that by getting thrown into live rounds on your first night. You learn it by building a foundation.

The Foundations Experience
Every adult at Gracie Barra Centennial, ages 16 and up, starts here. It’s your first 30 days, built so you’re never guessing and never thrown in before you’re ready.
You start one on one. Two private lessons with a coach, 30 minutes each. Before you ever join a group class, someone learns your name, your goals, and your history. If you’re coming back from an injury, this is where you tell us, and we build around it.
No live rolling until you’re ready. Your private lessons come before the open mat. You’ll learn the positions, escapes, and defenses first. Sparring comes when you have the tools for it, not before.
Your uniform is yours from day one. A gi and belt are included, so you look and feel like you belong the first time you walk in.
You always know what’s next. You get access to our app curriculum, so you can see what you’re learning, review it at home, and show up prepared.
A real milestone in 30 days. We call it 30 Days to Your First Stripe. It’s a real promotion in front of the room, and your family is invited. For a lot of people, it’s the first time in years they’ve been recognized for learning something hard.
If you’ve trained before
Foundations isn’t starting over. It’s starting right. Most people who leave jiu-jitsu were rushed past the fundamentals. They were sparring before they could defend themselves, and their body paid for it. Coming back through private lessons and a structured first month fixes what got skipped.
I started at 39
I walked into my first class at 39 with a job, a family, and zero interest in getting hurt. I stayed because the school taught me before it tested me. Eight years later I earned my black belt. Not because I was the strongest guy in the room. I almost never was. Because the foundation held.
Your first step
Whether this is your first class or your first class back, it starts in the same place.
