Week 14 Gracie Barra Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Training

This week at Gracie Barra Centennial we are teaching some very important moves of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Many times a fight moves to the ground and sometimes we are in bad positions. This week we learn how to turn from those bad positions into better ones. 

GB1 – In the fundamentals class we learn how to move from turtle and being in a headlock to top position. We all are very familiar with the difficulty of recovering from side mount. This week under Master Carlos Gracie Jr.’s guidance we learn some classic guard recovery. 

GB2 – In the advanced classes our professors will share their favorite hip and hand throws to help you get those important first two points in competition. We will also learn some great submissions from side mount. This is a great week to up your game for competition.

GBK – In our Gracie Barra Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Kids Program we follow along the same lines of our fundamentals. This is great for parents and kids growing in the program together. They can share their experiences and practice together. Our Kids will learn important headlock escapes, how to recover the guard from side mount and a great hip throw.

GB Technique : The Omoplata

The omoplata has many different setups from Spider, Lasso and Sleeve and collar Grip Guard and shines when we go no-gi. Without our ability to control the opponent’s sleeve or collar, we need other methods to control an aggressive opponent looking to pass.

Omoplata is of great benefit to those jiu-jitsu students with short legs that don’t feel effective when trying to apply the triangle choke on heavier opponents. The good news is that most of the triangle setups that you’ve learned may be applied to your omoplata attacks.

Let’s see some of the best omoplata variations as taught by Gracie Barra instructors.

1) Closed Guard Omoplata / Omoplata partindo da Guarda Fechada
A good place to start our study of the omoplata is the closed guard with Prof. Daniel Ramos.
* Note the grips Prof. Daniel is using to prevent the opponent from rolling out.

2) Omoplata From Spider Guard
Prof. Draculino teaches us one of the most potent weapons of the spider guard player, the omoplata setup.
* Note how Prof. Draculino finishes the omoplata as he scoots back to place downwards pressure on the shoulder.

3) Lapel Guard to Omoplata / Controle de guarda c/ lapela + Finalização
Prof. Victor Estima is one of Gracie Barra’s top competitors representing the Red Shield and in this video we see an advanced strategy of using lapels leading to the omoplata finish.

4)Standing Omoplata Sweep / Raspagem c/ o oponente em pé
One of my black belt friends who specializes in the omoplata claims that he sees the omoplata as 70% sweep and 30% submission. This sweep is one of the very best using omoplata against a standing passer.

5) Advanced Double Attack from the Mount
Prof. Philipe Della Monica shows a variation of the omoplata that you can attack from the mount. The pressure is applied to the opponent’s shoulder in a similar way to the more conventional omoplata.

Gracie Barra Week 13 – Jiu-Jitsu Guards

GB1 – This week in our fundamental class we learn how to defend  the roundhouse kick and respond with a double leg takedown. On the ground game we improve our skill of the situp sweep and transition to the kimura submission. These fundamentals are key to a solid Jiu-Jitsu game. We also begin to work on options from the spider guard. How to set it up and a few spider guard sweeps.

GB2-3 – In the advanced curriculum we are working from the guard using options of the De La Riva Guard and the X-Guard

GBK –  In our kids program we teach how to use the Push Kick to keep your distance. This is vital in confrontations. If we look back to UFC on we see Royce Gracie effectively use the push kick to set up his opponents and eventually win the competition.  On the ground game we work the Scissor Sweep and we learn more techniques to use your legs in the guard.

Week 12 Gracie Barra Jiu-Jitsu Training Curriculum

In week 12 we move on to some great self defense techniques from stand up position and then we learn turtle guard and taking the back on the ground game. 

GB1 – In our fundamentals class we learn to defend the bear hug both from the front and the back. This is a common attack position for a bully or assailant.  When the game hits the ground we learn how to protect ourselves in turtle guard as well as how to attack someone when they are in the turtle. You will learn a choke from top position over turtle, how to take the back and how to finish from the back in a rear collar and rear naked choke. 

GBK – Our kids will also learn how to defend from a bear hug and a rear choke. On the ground game the kids will practice controlling from the mount position, how to take the back as well as a few submissions. 

GB3 – In our advanced curriculum, our professors will lend some keen insight about foot throws as well as some awesome submissions from the ground.

Week 11 Gracie Barra Training Curriculum

In Week 11, we get to review some of the basics. At Gracie Barra we believe having a solid understanding of fundamentals is key to having a strong game. 

GB1 – We start every GB1 class with self-defense. This week you will learn to transition from turtle position and knee-on-the-belly to to full guard. You go from being very vulnerable to the control position.

In  The sport Jiu-Jitsu aspects of the GB1 class we review keeping a solid posture and how to break a closed guard. You will also learn to classic passes, one arm under and two arms under. 

GB2-3 – In our advanced classes the professors key in on Leg Grab takedowns and techniques from the Top Guard. 

GBK – Our Little Champs work more on distance control – How to stay at a safe distance from their opponents. We will also share a class single leg takedown. From Top Guard position we will learn how to keep good posture, break the guard and pass to mount.

GB Learning : The Hip Throw

This week on Gracie Barra Blog we look at one of the fundamental takedowns in grappling : the Hip Throw.

This is likely one of the very first techniques that you learned in Judo and Jiu-jitsu and we see it especially in self defense techniques.

It is a powerful technique that employs many of the concepts of throws that you may apply to learning all of your other throws as well. The concepts of unbalancing the opponent (Kuzushi), foot work and getting underneath your opponent’s center of gravity.

Let’s see how some Gracie Barra instructors use the hip throw and some variations.

1) Basic Hip throw to scarf hold / Queda de Quadril
This is the most basic way to perform the hip throw. Notice how Prof. Rafael Tarabay from Sao Paulo transitions quickly to scarf hold to secure the top position after the throw.

2) Variation #1
World Champion Prof Otavio Sousa demonstrates his favorite variation of a hip throw. This variation is known as Morote seionage in Judo. Note how low Prof. Otavio gets underneath his opponent’s center of gravity.

3) Hip throw to Sacrifice throw combination
The sacrifice throw is known in Japanese as “Taniotoshi”

4) Hip Throw variation #2 / Técnica de Queda de Quadril
Prof. Fabio Lima teaches us how to use the grips to unbalance the opponent and execute a variation that includes the lifting power of the leg. This is known as “Uchimata” in Judo.

5) Combination Throw / Single Leg Counter Attack
Prof. Carlos Lemos Jr. shows us how after his opponent counters his single leg attempt, he quickly transitions to the hip throw.

Week 10 Gracie Barra Centennial Jiu-Jitsu Armbars, Mount and Knee on Belly

Come to Gracie Barra Centennial Jiu-Jitsu this week and learn how to defend yourself from a takedown with a classic guillotine choke. We are also teaching submissions from the mount position. Learn a quality armbar and a keylock submission. In addition we are teaching the key points of knee on belly. 

In the advance classes we are working on hand and hip throws, mount and knee on the belly submissions. 

In the GBK program we show how to do a headlock takedown as well as defense for it. We also follow similar moves in the adult curriculum, as the knee on the belly and working from the mount.

GB Learning : Standing Guard Passes

Gracie Barra Professors Standing Guard Passes

What are the advantages to passing the guard standing?
More difficult for the opponent to attack a submission because of distance.
You are able to make better use of your speed advantage and move side to side on top.
Standing will negate the advantages of some styles of guard ex. Butterfly guard and closed guard. Let’s see how some of Gracie Barra’s instructors pass the guard standing.

1) Passing the Closed Guard
Most of us learn our first closed guard pass from the knees but many black belts (like Professor Rodrigo Freitas of Gracie Barra Manhattan Beach & Professor Mikey Gomez of Gracie Barra Temecula here) prefer standing to pass the closed guard. One of the advantages is that it is easier to open the tightly closed ankles while standing.

2) Standing Leg Drag Pass
Head instructor at GB HQ in Irvine, California show one of the essential standing passes with some key details on the leg grip and hip movement.

3) X Guard Pass
Prof. Kiko Meneghetti of GB Barao Geraldo shows how we can negate one of the opponent’s hooks to back step out of the Xguard. Note Prof. Kiko’s specific grips.

4) Standing Bull Fighter Pass Variation / Passagem de Guarda Aberta
This standing pass come from GB Vitoria. The grip in the belt is especially effective to control the guard player’s hip movement.

5) Standing Bullfighter / Leg Drag hybrid pass
I’m not sure if this standing guard pass by Prof. Villem Coelho of GB Jacarepagua is a Bullfighter or a Leg Drag variation, but it is an awesome standing pass combining elements of both classic passes!

Week 9 Gracie Barra Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Training Curriculum

Week 9 training is awesome. We learn some great self-defense moves from standing, transitions to the guard, sacrifice throws and fun ground game techniques.

GB1 Fundamentals: Come learn to duck a hook punch and transition to a throw and takedown. Work on the art of the Pendulum sweep and perfect the armbar. You definitely will not want to miss how to take the back from closed guard or how to do a solid triangle. This week is going to be fun. You do not want to miss it. 

GBK: Our kids will learn how to protect themselves by using distance with a safe stance, arms and legs. It will be cool to see them practice the open guard and keep their opponents away with the legs. The more advanced kids will work on cross color chokes, kimura’s and triangles. Watch your kids Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu improve this week. 

GB2-3 Advanced: Come this week to see our Professors share their favorite sacrifice throws, transitions to the guard ans setups for solid submissions. Each week in the advanced class there are always some new trends to learn.
